The first anniversary

Arnold and I will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary on 16 March. I can’t believe that we’ve almost been married for one year! We still can’t decide what we’d like to do to celebrate the occasion, so I asked for your help on Instagram and you guys shared some awesome ideas. Keep reading to find out which ideas we really liked and what we’re thinking of doing for our anniversary.

It’s been a wonderful first year – a year with ups and downs, lots of learning and growing, and one with most heart-melting moments. I’m more in love than ever before, but we’ve also had to work through some tough stuff. Marriage is not for the faint of heart! But it has been so rewarding, and in many ways our marriage has inspired me. There are so many lessons you learn when you’re married that can be applied to all areas of life – patience, love, tolerance…

Arnold has really inspired me to be a better person in all areas of life.

While we want to make the day a special one, we don’t want to spend a lot of money. As young, newlyweds, our budget is tight and we don’t have a lot of extra money to spend. That being said, we have so much to celebrate, so we still want to do something significant.

We had a few ideas, but we really needed your help! I asked my Instagram followers for inspiration, and some of you gave me some amazing ideas! I’ve decided to share some of our favourite ideas in the hopes that it will help us make a decision – and give other couples some anniversary celebration ideas too.

A weekend away – one of the suggestions was a weekend away with champagne, chocolate and quality time. This was one of the things I was hoping to do for our anniversary. It’s always nice to get away, even if it’s just for a night or two. We had our eye on some amazing and affordable Airbnb accommodation in Port Elizabeth, so we’ll definitely be considering this idea.

A weekend away on a wine farm – one of my followers shared that she and her husband celebrated their first wedding anniversary on a wine farm. I would love to do this, and the best part is you don’t have to travel to the Cape to enjoying a weekend in the winelands – there are some great options in Plettenberg Bay too.

Couples massage – an intimate and special treat for an anniversary. While this was one of the suggestions I received on Instagram, Arnold also suggested this since he really enjoyed the complimentary couples massage we received on our honeymoon in Mauritius.

A blind wine tasting with friends – this was a suggestion we received from a friend of ours who celebrated their first wedding anniversary with a blind wine tasting (we were invited and it was lots of fun!). They served cheese and snacks, and everyone brought a bottle of their favourite wine with them. The hosts covered the wine in paper bags so we wouldn’t know which wines we were drinking. We rated the wines and chose a winner -and the results were surprising! Celebrating such a special day with friends is a lovely idea. If we don’t do this for our anniversary, we’ll definitely host an evening like this at some point.

Dinner at a fancy restaurant – a date night at a nice restaurant is also a special idea. Arnold and I enjoy sharing a meal and a bottle of wine, and I secretly think we may do this if we can’t decide what to do. My friend suggested we try Muse Restaurant in Richmond Hill. While we’ve never been to Muse before, I’ve heard some really good things about their food and we’re keen to give them a try!

Plant a tree – this was the most beautiful idea sent to me. This is something I’d love to do for an anniversary when we have our own home with a garden; a home where we can plant a seed and watch the tree grow together (so cheesy, but so good).

An experience for a couple seeking adventure – one of the most unique suggestions I received was…bungee jumping! I don’t know if I’d be able to go through with it, but this is an awesome idea for a thrill-seeking couple. I’m sure you’ll remember an experience like this forever.
