This passed weekend, Arnold and I travelled to Patensie for a friend’s wedding. Patensie is a ‘dorpie’ (Afrikaans word for a small town) in the Eastern Cape home to acres of citrus trees and lush greenery. The picturesque town is absolutely still and peaceful; a must-visit if you’re seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
While in Patensie, I really wanted to find something fun to do. Arnold had been in town the previous weekend for the bachelor party, and had found Padlangs Country Restaurant and Shop while out exploring. We decided that we would grab a bite to eat at the restaurant before the ceremony.
Padlangs country restaurant and shop in patensie
The restaurant and shop boasts a stunning setting, with views of mountains in the distance, and a big green garden in the front. When I think of the restaurant and shop’s décor, the words ‘quaint’ and ‘quirky’ come to mind. Succulents in old Ouma Rusk tins, an eclectic mix of antique furniture and art, protea plant centrepieces – these items give the establishment its charm and character.
We sat outside at a table with a view of the garden and kids play area. The menu has a great variety to choose from, including pizzas, wraps, tramezzinis, breakfasts and desserts. They also have an extensive wine menu and serve local craft beer.
Arnold ordered coffee and a BBQ chicken wrap, and I ordered a chocolate milkshake and a calamari starter. He really enjoyed his wrap and his ‘boeretroos’ (Afrikaans word for coffee). My plate of calamari and chips was good (it was quite a big portion for a starter), and my chocolate milkshake was super thick and delicious. We enjoyed our meal so much that we decided to stop for breakfast before heading home to Port Elizabeth the next day. This time we opted for roosterkoek (or braaibroodjies) with egg, bacon and cheese. It was delicious, but very filling (I took my second roosterkoek home with me).
The play area in the front garden features a jungle gym and a splash pad, making it a great option for families with small children. The garden also features a giant chess set, and an oversized chair perfect for photo-ops. Entering the shop, you’ll find a variety of knick-knacks, sweets, jams and locally produced goods for sale on display.
If you’re ever in Patensie, or just passing through, and you’re looking for a tasty meal with a view or a family-friendly pit stop, be sure to stop at Padlangs Country Restaurant and Shop.
